The Future of Sport - Fuel

We've got something different for you this week.  Our friends over at EscapePod.org are allowing us to broadcast one of their episodes - "Fuel" by Matthew Rotundo - that deals with the future of athletic performance enhancement.  This is a great episode to generate conversation about the future of performance and what we will allow as a society.  So, give it a listen and we hope you enjoy this special episode.

Truth is stranger than fiction - and fiction is becoming truth. I love the new word introduced in this podcast: Nutriceuticals ! I hope folks waded through the intro to get to the story; since it is not the usual "tone" of your podcasts. I didn't mind, because I am an Sci-Fi reader; but it took a while to get to the story. The story leaves a bunch of open ended questions (and a fully dysfunctional family after his plan plays out- I believe) to be answered. What we value is simple. Cicero said more than 2,000 years ago: "If you want to know what a culture values the most, look for the biggest buildings." In the USA, it was Courthouses, then Libraries, then Banks- and now? Stadiums.
Dr. Salk had to go back to work, and HS dropouts are making over a 100 million dollars for playing a game. The Nike man in the story , might be right. LOL Fuel indeed. You could do a podcast on this podcast! Supplements may become Primairments - new word. New world. Kevin the all natural man, which may be the Luddite of the next decade.

I thought I had entered my comment, but this screen came back up. So, here is a shorter version. All natural men, like me; may become the Luddites of the next decade. Refusing to "Fuel" may become socially unacceptable, and I will have to move to an enclave of "all natural men and women" in Montana. You could actually do a podcast on this podcast, due to the many open ended questions left dangling at the end of the story. Does Jamie run, win, and get hooked? Does Scott realize he was duped? Or is that doped? Will academics lose favor in the long run?
As Marcus Aurellius said more than 2,000 years ago: "If you want to know what a culture values; look for the grandest and biggest buildings. In the USA, it was churches, then courthouses, then libraries - then military bldgs, and now? Stadiums. Salk had to go back to work, and HS dropouts are making 100 million dollars for playing a game. Neutiaceuticals, (love that new word. So accurate!) may be our future. Me? A normal human to be pitied for not taking the leap into superior abilities, just the ones I was born with.

This is one of those short stories that I would be glad to see expanded upon, but alas....
Well written, a great theme and engrossing story.

The future of Athletic sport could be in danger as people are trying to neglect towards these things. This post does leave many questions unanswered.
