The Case Of The Disappearing Muscles: The Mystery Of Muscle Wasting In Old Age And Cancer

Dr. Melinda Sheffield-Moore (Texas A&M class of 1987), received her Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics from Ball State University in 1997. Before joining Texas A&M, Dr. Sheffield-Moore was employed as a tenured Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). She has spent her career conducting human clinical translational research seeking to discover the metabolic and molecular mechanisms behind skeletal muscle wasting and loss of skeletal muscle function in cancer, aging, spaceflight, and traumatic brain injury. She has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health her entire 20-year career at UTMB, and has also successfully obtained Foundation and Endowment funding for her research.

Her research has resulted in 71 published papers in a broad range of high impact medical journals including JAMA, Clinical Translational Science, FASEB, Journal of Neurotrauma, and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. She has served the School of Medicine as a Course Director, teacher/facilitator of clinical courses to 2nd year medical students, lectured in cell biology graduate courses for the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, mentored numerous students at all levels (undergraduate, graduate, medical students, physician residents and physician fellows and PhD fellows) and served on many local and national committees.

Finally, her service has included leadership and director level roles while at UTMB in the many Centers and Institutes within the School of Medicine.
